Packaging Glossary

Key terms used throughout the corrugated packaging industry. Bookmark this page for quick reference.

BCT (Box Compression Test)

The measured force required to crush a completed box. Determined by ECT value, box perimeter, and a multiplier constant.

BMC (Box Maker Certificate)

The round or rectangular stamp on a box flap certifying construction specs, ECT/Mullen rating, and weight limits.

Corrugated Board

A composite material consisting of one or more layers of fluted medium glued between flat linerboard sheets.

DIM Weight (Dimensional Weight)

A pricing method used by carriers that factors in box volume, not just actual weight. Calculated as (L x W x H) / DIM factor.

Double Wall

Board construction with two fluted layers between three linerboard sheets. Common in gaylords and heavy-duty shipping boxes.

ECT (Edge Crush Test)

Measures edgewise compressive strength of corrugated board in lbs per linear inch. Primary strength metric for stacking ability.

FEFCO Code

International code system for corrugated box styles published by the European Federation of Corrugated Board Manufacturers.

Flute

The wavy, arched layer of medium sandwiched between linerboard sheets. Flute type (A, B, C, E, F) determines thickness and performance.

Gaylord Box

A large corrugated bin designed to sit on a pallet, also called a bulk bin or pallet box. Typically 48 x 40 inches at the base.

HSC (Half Slotted Container)

A box with flaps on only one end (typically the bottom). Common gaylord style where the top remains open for loading.

Kraft Linerboard

The flat outer layers of corrugated board, made from kraft (virgin) or recycled fiber. Weight measured in lbs per 1,000 sq ft.

LTL (Less Than Truckload)

A freight shipping method for shipments too large for parcel but smaller than a full truckload. Common for bulk box orders.

Medium

The corrugated (wavy) inner sheet of a corrugated board panel. Made from semi-chemical or recycled fiber pulp.

Mullen Burst Test

Measures puncture resistance of corrugated board face in PSI. Older standard being replaced by ECT for most uses.

RSC (Regular Slotted Container)

The most common box style. All flaps are the same length; outer flaps meet at center. FEFCO code 0201.

Score Line

A crease pressed into corrugated board to create a fold line. Used for flaps and multi-depth box height adjustment.

Single Wall

Board construction with one fluted layer between two linerboard sheets. The most common corrugated structure for shipping boxes.

Triple Wall

Board construction with three fluted layers between four linerboard sheets. Heaviest-duty corrugated; can replace wooden crates.

Void Fill

Material used to fill empty space inside a box to prevent product movement. Includes paper, air pillows, foam, and packing peanuts.

Wax-Coated / Wax-Dipped

Corrugated board treated with wax for moisture resistance. Common in produce and food industry gaylords. Not recyclable.

Die-Cut Box

A box cut to a custom shape using a steel die, rather than standard slotted construction. Used for mailers and retail packaging.
